Establishment of SMVDU

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) has been established under THE JAMMU AND KASHMIR SHRI MATA VAISHNO DEVI UNIVERSITY ACT, 1999.an Act of the J&K State Legislature (ACT No. XII of 1999 dated 12th May 1999) as an autonomous, highly Technical & fully Residential University.

The university was inaugurated on 19^th August 2004 by the then Hon'ble President of India Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, who also delivered the first lecture to the students, and started functioning

Recognition

The University is approved by UGC under Section 2(F) & Section 12(B) of UGC Act of 1956.

The technical programs offered by SMVDU are recognized by AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education) while Architecture program is recognized by Council of Architecture.

Funding

The university receives funding from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB)- an autonomous board set up in August 1986 under the provisions of the Jammu & Kashmir Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Act, 1986 of J&K State Legislature. The university also receivess funds from University Grants Commission (UGC), Govt. of India.

J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Graces the 8th Convocation of SMVDU

The 8th Convocation of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University was held on July 30, 2022. The Chief Guest of the Convocation was the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha.

During the Convocation, a total of 1168 degrees were awarded to students, including PhDs, Masters and Bachelors. A total of 08 gold medals and 10 silver medals were also presented to meritorious students. There were also 21 recipients of the Infosys Foundation Prize of excellence.

SMVDU is a beautiful campus with a variety of facilities, including academic buildings, hostels, a library, a sports complex, and a hospital. The university is home to a diverse student body from all over India and the world.

Location : The Campus

SMVDU is located 40 Kms north of Jammu in the scenic surroundings of Trikuta foothills, near the holy town of Katra in the Reasi district. The campus is situated close to the beautiful tourist resort of Jhajjar-Kotli. One can reach SMVDU campus by local or private transport from Jammu. The campus is 6 kms. off the new 4 lane highway connecting Jammu and Udhampur.

How to reach:

Route 1: Catch Taxi from Jammu Railway Station / Bus Stand/Airport directly to SMVDU Campus (Distance Approx. 45 Kms.) The nearest railway station is the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station (Code: SVDK), located 10 kilometers from the university.

Route 2: Board bus from Jammu Bus Stand/Railway Station plying to Udhampur/Katra but alight at Domel (Approx. 39 Kms.). Board Mini Bus from Domel to University (Approx. 8 Kms.)

Weather and Surroundings

_Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) campus is situated at an altitude of 2,700 feet above sea level, and the weather is pleasant year-round.

_● Summer: The summer months (June-September) are warm and dry, with average temperatures ranging from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius. The sun shines brightly for most of the day, and there is little rainfall.

_● Winter: The winter months (December-February) are cool and dry, with average temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius. The nights can be quite cold, and there is some snowfall in the higher altitudes.

_● Monsoon: The monsoon season (June-September) is the wettest time of year, with heavy rainfall and occasional thunderstorms. The weather can be quite humid during this time, but it is also a time of lush greenery and vibrant flowers.

The University doesn’t charge any other fee apart from those notified on the university website. The above Fee Structure may be subject to an increase as may be decided by the University Authorities.

Financial Assistance

Scholarship Details for Four Year B.Tech.program

The University has initiated Student Merit cum Means Scholarship Scheme (SMMSS) to inculcate work culture and competitive spirit among the students. Under SMMSS, the University provides financial assistance in terms of semester tuition fee waiver & Hostel

Fee waiver, ranging from 10% to 100% on the basis of merit during the semester to the top 10% meritorious students in various professional disciplines.

The program is valid for one semester only and the student will have to remain in the top 10% with a SGPA of not less than 8.50 in order to be eligible for receiving the same in the next semester. The program is a continuous feature of the varsity's academic curriculum.

Scholarship Details for B.Arch.program based on JEE rank-2020 (CRL below 3000 only) can be accessed from university website.

SMDVDU Training & Placement Cell

University has a fully-fledged Training & Placement cell consisting of dedicated team of Student Coordinators, Faculty Coordinators and Staff members. Sports Facilities

The department of Sports has already started activities of games and sports from the session 2004 - 2005, and many matches have been organized in the campus during the previous session. The department of Sports has decided to promote competitive games and sports in the University on the State and National Level by organizing the sports programmes, sports seminars and by developing the sports infrastructure in the campus. In order to raise the standards of performance of the University sports at the state and national level competitions, the process of result oriented planning and nurturing of the talent on scientific principles of modern training methodology, this department will chose the best number of players among students of various courses on the basis of their performance in the different activities (games and sports). The selection will be made by giving chance to students of the university to prove their worth in the various sports activities.

The University promotes student participation in various outdoor and indoor games. Students are encouraged to participate in games and sports activities, which include cricket, football, table tennis, lawn tennis, volleyball, badminton, weightlifting, multi-gym, basketball. There are plans to expand the number of games and activities to include hiking and mountaineering, hockey, swimming and water polo athletics (men and women). Participation of students in these activities equips them to sharpen their competitive skills and develop team spirit. In charge Sports is assisted by well qualified physical training instructors to help the students in developing their interest in the games and in enhancing their participation standards. The indoor sports complex has been equipped with table tennis (men and women), badminton (men and women), weightlifting and multi-gym facilities. A cricket cum sports field is also available on the campus.

Sports Infrastructure

Sports Hall: The department has set up an indoor Sports Hall with the introduction of the four best quality International standards TT Tables in it. In addition to Indoor Badminton court the other indoor games like carom, chess etc. are also played here.

Gym Centre: The department has established a small Gym centre in the campus. This centre is equipped with Parallel bars, uneven bars and weight exercise equipment. Students are fully benefited by this center in the morning and evening times. However multi-gym will be launched in the near future.

Volley ball Court: The department has also set up three Volley Ball courts (one for girls and two for boys) adjoining to their respective Hostels in the campus.

Yoga: Apart from the games and sports regular Yoga classes are conducted in the campus to develop the spirit of meditation among the students. By practicing yoga the students will learn about the spiritual and moral values of life.

SMVDU is located 40 kM North of Jammu in the scenic surroundings of Trikuta foothills, near the holy town of Katra in District -Reasi. The Campus is situated close to the beautiful tourist resort of Jhajjar - Kotli. One can reach SMVDU campus by local or private transport from Jammu. The campus is 6 kms. off the new 4 lane highway connecting Jammu and Udhampur.
