About the Institute

History

The National Institute of Technology Patna is the Eighteenth National Institute created by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, upon rechristening a new name to the erstwhile Bihar College of Engineering, Patna. The Institute will admit 949 students to the undergraduate (B. Tech and B. Arch), 300 students to the Post Graduate Programs (M Tech/M Arch/MURP) and about 200+ students to the PhD programme every year on the basis of all India competition. It offers degree courses, post graduate courses and PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering and Architecture.  It also offers PhD programmes in Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry and Department of HSS. The Institute is partially residential in nature providing facilities for accommodation to few students as well as the teaching/non-teaching staff in its campus spread over 36 acres of land.  

Campus

The existing infrastructures provide a conducive environment with an exciting campus life so necessary for professional growth. Behind the historic administrative building lies the main academic building which also houses the Civil Engineering Department and class rooms. The Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Departments face one another about 200 meters west from the Administrative Building. The department of Architecture, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science and Engineering, the Centre for water resources studies is located in separate buildings 300 meters to the east of administrative building. The institute has  well equipped Computer Centre, Central Library nearby main building and Design Innovation Centre.  The institute is now well equipped with several other facilities like large lecture theaters with modern equipment and amenities, smart class rooms and Guest House. There are separate Medical centre. A new Girls Hostel on the bank of river Ganga  accommodates all girl students of the institute. A new Boys Hostel for first year students has been commissioned with state of the art facilities like modular kitchen, wi-fi and special facilities for differently abled students. 

 The extra-curricular activities include facilities for outdoor and indoor games, open air theater. We also have a local chapter of SPICMACAY for extra-curricular activities and student chapter for American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE). NIT Patna is the Institutional member of the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) which is devoted to promotion of quality and standards in technical education. Allahabad bank is operating in the campus.

 A very good Students Activity Centre is another attraction of the campus, with many modern facilities, cafeteria,  world class Badminton and Squash court, modern Gymnasium separately for boys and girls, and other facilities related to students activity.

 The Institute runs several essential services in the campus namely suitable drinking water, sanitation and maintenance of cleanliness, security arrangements,  own Doctors and Ambulance service for medical emergency help, EPABX and Internet facilities (wired and wireless) .

The Institute campus is spread over 36 acres and a picturesque river view with numerous historic buildings presenting a spectacle of architectural delight and natural beauty. It is partially residential in nature providing residential facilities to some of its students as well as to the faculties and staff as per availability. Behind the historic administrative building lies the main academic building, which also houses the Civil Engineering Department and the Information Technology departments. A Central Library building at the entrance of the institute has all possible modern facilities including e-resources. The Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Departments face one another about 200 meters west from the Administrative Building. The Department of Architecture, Electronics & Communication, Computer Science & Engineer and Centre for Water Resources Studies are located in separate buildings 300 meter to the east. The Computer Center building besides civil engineering department has state-of-art facility for computation and communication. Student’s activities center, new Girl’s Hostel, smart class rooms and large lecture theatres with modern equipment’s & amenities have been constructed recently. Several other facilities like, separate medical centre and open auditorium are also available.

The Institute has play ground where many National level football and cricket matches arranged in the past when Patna had no stadium. The extra-curricular activities include facilities for outdoor & indoor games, boating & rowing, open air theatre and availability of the local chapter of SPICMACAY. While banking facility is available in campus, Post-office and shopping centers are in the near vicinity. NIT Patna is the Institutional member of The Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) and INDEST which are devoted to promotion of quality and standards in technical education.

The Institute runs seven essential services in the campus namely 24 hours Electric Supply, suitable drinking water, sanitation and maintenance of cleanliness, security arrangements, and ambulance service for medical emergency, EPBX and Internet facilities. The library and all departments are under local area network and share the different academic/ student information database including with e-Library through PCs available in various departments, office, library and other offices

Hostel Accommodation

The Institute has five boys’ hostels and one girls’ hostel at present in the existing campus. Each hostel is self-contained with amenities such as a reading room, an indoor games room, a lounge and a dining hall with mess.

NIT Patna has five Boys hostels, namely Sone Hostel Block-A, Sone Hostel Block-B, Bagmati Hostel, Kosi Hostel, and Barhmputra Hostel & for girls, Ganga Hostel. The total capacities of Boys hostels are 1500+ and girls hostel is 400+. Electric power supply is for 24 hours in all the hostels. All the hostels have their separate common rooms with amenities like TV, Magazines, Newspapers and employment newspaper and indoor facilities such as Table tennis, carom, and chess. The hostels have ample space for cultural and other activities. Facilities of some outdoor games such as badminton, volleyball and basket-ball are also available within the hostel premises.  The available open spaces provide opportunity for outdoor meetings, cultural programme, quiz, yoga, or any group discussions. Besides above amenities, hostels have very good and spacious kitchen and dining space that caters breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea, snacks etc. to the boarders.  All the hostels also have water cooler. Full day service of sweeper & cleaners are available. The hostels are newly renovated with required furniture and regular maintenance. The ambience is calm to support studying environment for the boarders.  

Every year sports activities are planned for boys and girls students to provide them a healthy environment and to exhibit their talents in these activities. The students also participate in national level games and sports competition organized by various institutes of the country.

The foundation day of NIT Patna is being celebrated on 28th January every year. 

Annual Techno and cultural Fest namely Corona symbolizing creativity, enthusiasm and team spirit among the young generation of present day competitive age was organized. Through these events it is intended to provide a common platform for showcase their talents in various fields.

Training & Placement

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT

_NIT Patna has a strong liaison with the industries through its placement office. Employers from different sectors queue up to recruit students of the institute from their 7th semester. The placement season for 2023 pass-out students saw 119 companies including PSUs coming to the campus for offering jobs to the B. Tech and B. Arch students of NIT Patna. The placement season commenced on 20th July 2024 and the day one slot was given to Atlassian. Tech giants viz. Cashfree, OLX, Sabre, Western Digital Corporation, Delhivery, Phonepe, Amazon, Intuit among others offered employment to our students. The highest package of 52 LPA was offered by CRED followed by Google which offered packages of 48 LPAIntuit offered a package of 39.13 LPA to a CSE & ECE student. In the core sector, eminent employers like Ashok Leyland, Alstom, L&T ECC, Jindal Steel, Maruti Suzuki, JSW Steel, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Power, among others offered employment to our students. Also, many PSUs like BPCL, C Dot, C-DAC, IGL, Bharat Electronics Ltd., Engineers India Ltd., HPCL, offered employment to our students. _ The total percentage of job offers was 114 percent. The placement and training cell of NIT Patna has played a significant role in the training and proper placement of final and pre-final year students of NIT Patna.

NITP Alumni Association has been established to promote fellow felling. Through this association we keep our Alumni well informed and engaged with the institute because they are the most loyal supporters and our best ambassadors. Through this network we associate our Alumni to provide mentoring, internship and career opportunities to the students.

This Association celebrates the successes of our Alumni to motivate our students.

It also involve in motivating our Alumni to strengthen the institute with their knowledge share and donations. This association also involves in supporting young Alumini in the initial stage of their career.

Recreational/Extra Curricular activities


The students of NIT Patna manifested these exemplary qualities with great aplomb this year in terms of Student Activities and Sports. Their achievements have been manifold and the following is a summation of their efforts: A packed calendar saw our fifteen different Inter-Department and Open Tournaments have been conducted round the year. In the annals of time, Session 2022-23 in NIT Patna will be counted as the most successful year in sports. NIT Patna became the Overall Champion at All India inter NIT Weightlifting Competition for consecutive 4 times and Ravi Kumar Paswan of Mathematics Department awarded as a Best lifter of the competition. NIT Patna Athletics (M & W) team secured 8 medals with overall 4th place at All India inter NIT Athletics Meet and Chess team also secured 2 Gold medals. Apart from Sports in Cultural & Technical events our students did well at different institution fest and Hackathon. We have nine different cultural clubs (like Music club, Drama Club, Dance Club, Chess Club, Literary & Art Club, Yoga and Meditation Club etc) and fourteen different technical clubs (like Photography, Electronics, Web and Coding, ASME, Robotics, SAE, IEEE and Ecell etc). Students did well in the field of social awareness programs also.

Location and Accessibility

Existing campus of NIT Patna is situated on the south bank of river Ganges behind Gandhi Ghat, one of the most important reverence places of Patna. The Institute campus is 8 km from the Patna Junction railway station and 15 km from the Jai Prakash Narayan International Airport Patna. The entry to the institute is from Ashok Rajpath and it is about 3 km from Gandhi Maidan.

Additional campus of NIT Patna, Bihta Campus is around 40 KM from Patna city, & around 7 KM from proposed Bihta Airport and around 6 KM from Bihta Railway station. This additional campus is likely to be operational in July 2024 in campus of 125 Acres area at Mauja Sikanderpur, Bihta to accommodate 2500 students.
