About the Institute

Tripura is one of the eight states in the north-eastern part of India. Bangladesh borders the state on the north, west, south, and southeast, and it shares a common boundary with Assam and Mizoram in the east. The state is renowned for its picturesque greenery, with green forests covering about 60% of its total land area. 

The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), now MoE, issued the official notification for the conversion of Tripura Engineering College, Agartala, to the National Institute of Technology, Agartala, w.e.f. April 1, 2006, via notification No. F. 20-20/2004/TS III/ dated March 10, 2006. This is India's 20th NIT and the second oldest in the North-Eastern region. Established in 1965, the institute (previously known as Tripura Engineering College) offered three undergraduate engineering branches: Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical. It was initially affiliated with Calcutta University and had the same curriculum structure and examination system as Bengal Engineering College, like other institutes affiliated with the university. After the establishment of Tripura University, the institute became affiliated with the new Tripura University. 

In the 1999–2000 academic session, the institute initiated a B.Tech. degree course in Computer Science and Engineering. In the present day, the institute offers nine B.Tech. programmes as well as five dual degree programmes. Apart from this, the institute also offers MBA, MCA, and M.Sc. courses in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, along with a dual degree programme in Engineering Physics and science courses in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, and a C-DAC centre for imbibing vocational education within the academic and industrial communities. The institute introduced research programmes such as PhDs in 2012 in Engineering as well as Science disciplines. The institute has impelled the dispersion of quality education and pioneering research in the fields of science and technology, social upliftment, and rural development in the highly segregated regions of north-east India. 

In 2006, after conversion, the NIT began its journey with six departments and a student strength of 750 only. In 2014, the institute experienced significant growth, boasting nine departments catering to undergraduates, as well as PG and Ph.D. students. The institute's total strength now stands at 4810, comprising 3641 UG, 413 dual degree,  408 PG, 42 in certificate courses, and 283 PhD scholars. For M.Tech. and PhD programmes, the institute's students and scholars benefit from TEQIP, AICTE, and MHRD scholarships. The Institute also offers scholarships to its post-doctoral fellows. In 2012, NIT Agartala received approval to become a QIP Minor Centre and is now welcoming QIP scholars from other reputable institutes. The Joint Entrance Examination (Main) ranking determines the admission of undergraduate students. Common counselling, based on the all-India ranking in the GATE examination, determines admission for M.Tech. students. Ph.D. scholars are admitted through interviews and extensive publicity in all Indian newspapers.

The lush green campus of NIT Agartala also provides hostel facilities for the students. For this purpose, the institute has operationalized a boys hostel with a capacity of 1000 and a girls hostel with a capacity of 500. Recently, a new boys hostel with a capacity of 1500 has been operationalized. There are multi-story apartments for the faculty and staff of the institute within the campus. The campus also has a market complex for day-to-day household requirements. The institute also has an international guest house with fully-furnished rooms.

Nowadays, health is a major concern. Therefore, the institute has a hospital attached with an adequate number of doctors. The campus hospital is equipped with adequate medical instruments as well as an ambulance. Apart from this, there is a primary health centre at Jirania, which is only 4 (four) km. from NIT, Agartala. As far as medical facilities are concerned in Agartala city, there are two medical colleges and hospitals, and one private hospital. They are "Agartala Govt. Medical College," "Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Medical College and Hospital," and “ILS Hospital”. There is also a referral hospital, namely "Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital," at Agartala, which is only 17 km from NIT, Agartala.

NIT Agartala has a state-of-the-art sports complex, which is perhaps the best in any NIT in the region. On campus, extensive infrastructure development work is underway to construct additional academic blocks and recreational facilities. The institute has equipped its laboratories with modern facilities that cater to academic and research requirements.

The institute at present has an adequate number of faculty members. The institute's main strength is its experienced, highly qualified, young, and motivated faculties.  The institute has signed MoUs with foreign universities, such as  Sonoma State University, California, US, and Durham University, UK, for academic exchange programmes. 

USP:

1. Out of 8 NIT’s in the North-East, NIT Agartala was the only institute to get accredited status for its courses from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) in 2013. The NBA recently accredited the departments of electrical and civil engineering as well.

2. The only NIT to host a Kendriya Vidyalaya school up to the 12th standard within the campus.

*Note:
a. The SC/ST/PH Students shall get complete tuition fee waiver.
b. The Most Economically Backward Students (whose family income is less than Rs 1.00 lakh per annum) shall get full remission of the tuition fee.
c. The Other Economically Backward Students (whose family income is between Rs. 1.00 lakh to Rs. 5.00 lakh per annum) shall get remission of 2/3rd of the tuition fee.

Academic Structure

Each academic session is divided into two semesters of approximately 18 weeks duration: an odd semester (July-December) and an even semester (January-June). 

Classes of all the semesters start at 9.00 am and end at 5.00 pm with a break in between. The Institute follows a 5-day week system with a maximum of 40 hours of weekly activities.
The SENATE approves the schedule of academic activities for a session inclusive of dates of registration, mid-semester and end-semester examinations, inter-semester breaks, etc.

Rules For Change Branch

Normally, a student admitted to a particular branch of the under graduate programme (B. Tech & BT-MT) will continue to study in the same branch till completion of the course. However, in special cases, the Institute may permit a student admitted through JoSAA/CSAB to change from one branch of studies to another after the first two semesters. Such changes will be permitted, in accordance with the provisions laid down in 6.3.

6.3 Only those students will be eligible for consideration of a change of branch after the second semester who have. 
(a) Completed all the common credits required in the first two semesters of their studies, in their first attempt without having any course requirement in the supplementary examination. 
(b) Obtained not less than CGPA 8.5 at the end of the second semester

Facilities

Academic Facilities: 
The Institute has all the basic infrastructural facilities for conducting undergraduate and postgraduate courses satisfactorily. It has an adequate number of well qualified and experienced faculty members, technical & supporting staff. This Institute has the following facilities:-
• Centralized Library (Knowledge Centre), 
• Computer Laboratory (Department-wise)

• Upgraded Laboratories with the latest equipments. 
• Campus Internet (Local Area Network and Wi-Fi)

Hostels:
The Institute has both Boys’ hostel and Girls’ hostel facilities. Presently there are 5(five) Boys’ hostels with a total intake capacity of 3000 and Girls’ hostels having intake capacity of 500. However, seats are limited at present and once the construction of the hostel is completed, all the students of the Institute will be in a position to stay in the campus. At present, all the students coming from states other than Tripura are given accommodation in the hostels. Besides this, the students from remote parts of Tripura are also accommodated in the hostels based on the availability of seats. Students who propose to stay in the hostel are required to fill out a form for admission. The prescribed form is available with the officials of the office of Chief Warden. Students selected for admission to Hostel have to deposit necessary fees.

International Guest House:
The institute has an international guest house comprising 5 suites, 43 double occupancy rooms, 2 conference halls, and a 30 seater dining hall.


Medical Care:
The Health Centre with a well equipped diagnostic Laboratory and a 24 hour pharmacy, centrally located within the campus at National Institute of Technology, Agartala. It provides dedicated Health services to the institute community comprising of students, employees, and their dependents and institute guests. It tenders 24 hours doctor, nursing, emergency, and ambulance services for its patients provided by in-house and outsourced staff. In case of emergency, the patients are referred to ILS Hospital/State Hospital.

Banks and Post Office: 
The State Bank of India and Canara Bank has a branch with ATM facilities operating from the Institute campus. Apart from this, the Punjab & Sindh Bank also has an ATM facility in the Institute premises. The Tripura Gramin Bank runs one branch in the Institute Complex. There is a Sub-Post Office in the name of ‘‘NIT, Agartala’’ in the Institute campus and its PIN Code is 799046

Library (Knowledge Centre):
NITA Central Library started functioning in 2006 with limited resources in an old small building (Formerly it was Tripura Engineering College managed and controlled by the (Higher Education, Govt. of Tripura) Since then, it has grown in size and content to take a notable shape. NITA Library is now in a new, sophisticated building with all modern amenities for library readers. At present, the ground floor is 2282.00 sq m, and the first floor is 2282.00 sq m. of the new building. The new Library building, also known as 'Knowledge Centre' has large floor area with following sections: Acquisition, Processing (Technical), Circulation, Reserve, Reference, Literature, Non-Book, Text Book, Digital library, Reprography, Back volume Journals (bound) and other Periodicals, Current periodicals, and magazines display. 

Sports Complex:
The institute has a state-of-the-art sports complex with indoor and outdoor facilities.



Communication:
There are to-and-fro direct private bus services from Agartala to the institute. Besides this, daily commuters get an adequate number of buses, jeeps, and private vehicles. These ply regularly on NH-44, the road that links the institute to Agartala.

Recreational/Extra Curricular activities

The students actively participate in all co-curricular activities like games and sports, techno-cultural festivals, essay competition, drama competition, rallies on various themes, NSS programmes etc. sponsored by the State Government, Central Government and other statutory bodies and the Institute authority. 
N.S.S or N.C.C. is a compulsory subject for all students in first year.
Apart from these, there are several clubs and societies managed by the students. Every year, the students publish UPSHIFT, a magazine on technology and innovation.

Location and Accessibility

The Institute is located in the midst of serene greenery having a picturesque natural beauty. It is about 4 km away from the National Highway and about 20 km from Agartala, the capital city of Tripura. Agartala is linked with the rest of the country by air, rail, and road. It has got direct Air Link with Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Guwahati, Shillong, Imphal, etc. The nearest railway station from the Institute campus is Jirania.
